How to Plant Yellow Bamboo
Yellow bamboo (Phyllostachys aureosulcata) is more commonly called Golden Groove bamboo. This green and yellow stemmed bamboo plant, popular in the United States, is often used as a living fence or privacy hedge. As the plant matures, the stems turn completely yellow. Yellow bamboo can grow up to 33 feet tall and is classified as a running bamboo, which means it will spread rapidly if it is not contained by a barrier when planted.
Choose a location that is in full sun or partial shade. Yellow bamboo grows best if it is exposed to at least 6 hours of sunlight per day. If your area suffers from cold temperatures and strong winds, choose a protected location for your bamboo plant--perhaps near a wall or next to a fence.

Set the plant in a shady area and mist the leaves and roots with water while you are preparing the planting zone.
Dig a hole with a shovel that is just an inch or so wider and deeper as the root ball. Then, use a pick to break up the sides of the hole. This creates openings for the bamboo's rhizomes.
Set the yellow bamboo plant in the hole so that the top of the roots are level with the surface of the ground. Fill in around the plant with the soil you removed from the hole.
Water the plant thoroughly. Create a slight depression around the plant, which will act as a basin to catch water. Then, surround the plant with a thick layer of mulch. Continue to water on a regular basis, letting the top of the soil dry slightly between waterings. Dip the tip of your finger into the soil. If the top inch or so is dry, it's time to water.

Tip
If you want to stop the bamboo from spreading, dig a trench around the plant and insert a plastic bamboo barrier, which are sold at most garden centers.
