Step 1
Pour the water you use for plants into a container and note the amount. If it is tap water, let it sit a few days so the chlorine evaporates.

Follow the directions on your pH testing kit or meter to test the water. This will involve dipping the tester into the water.

Read the results according to the kit's directions. Meters will give you a read-out. Paper strips make use of a color chart.

Retest the water. The pH may have changed a little or a lot, depending on how much water you started with, how extreme the pH was and the water's alkalinity, which buffers the water from easily changing pH.

Tip
Always use the same strength of vinegar or lemon juice. Look on the package for its strength as a percentage of the liquid, say, 4 or 7 percent vinegar or acetic acid. If you are testing the pH of water used for hydroponics gardening, you must first add hydroponic fertilizer to the water before testing pH. Water pH is not the only pH at issue. Fertilizers make soil more acidic over time. It's a good idea to test your soil if your water pH adjustments aren't making a difference to plants. Tap water tends to be alkaline to prevent it from corroding pipes. If your soil is very acid, alkaline water might be favorably offsetting it. Keep in mind that pure rain water has a pH of about 5.6.
