Exmark Vs. Scag Mower

Exmark and Scag Power Equipment are both leaders in the production of commercial lawn mowers. Both companies were launched in the early 1980s, and both merged with better-established companies to grow and satisfy the demands of their respective customers. When comparing the similarities of and differences between Exmark and Scag, one finds the two surprisingly neck and neck in terms of popularity, affordability, production and success.

Beginnings

Exmark originated in Nebraska in 1982 as a manufacturer of professional lawn care equipment. The company started out producing only walk-behind mowers, but by 1987 introduced its first riding mower to keep up with the growing and changing market. Then in 1997 Exmark became a division of The Toro Company.

Scag Power Equipment was formed in 1983 in Wisconsin. Two years later it was purchased by Metalcraft of Mayville. Beginning with just one gear-drive rider, Scag now boasts more than 50 models of commercial mowers ranging from walk-behinds to riders to stand-on machines.

Zero-Turn Mowers

Exmark offers eight zero-turn riding mowers with deck sizes ranging from 42 inches to 72 inches. Scag makes five different zero-turn mowers. Deck sizes range from 36 to 72 inches.

Stand-on Mowers

Both Exmark and Scag have one stand-on model. Exmark's stand-on mower decks are 36, 48 and 52 inches wide. Scag's stand-on mowers have widths of 36, 48, 52 and 61 inches.

Walk-Behind Mowers

Exmark carries seven walk-behind mowers with 21- to 60-inch decks. Scag's three walk-behind models range from 32 to 52 inches in deck width.

Differences

Only Exmark has introduced an eco-friendly line of mowers, which operate on propane. These mowers have decks that are 60 to 72 inches wide. However, Scag stands alone in offering a front-mount three-wheel riding mower that is superior on hillsides and other areas that are difficult to maneuver.

Similarities

Both Scag and Exmark cater to commercial lawn services. They produce tough, rugged machines designed to withstand hours of use in abusive conditions. Neither company offers any residential equipment.
