How to Build a Bird Feeding Pole Out of PVC Pipe
If you've ever installed a bird feeder in your yard, you'll quickly discover that you attract squirrels as much as you attract birds. The squirrels chase the birds away from the bird feeder and eat the birdseed inside. Keeping the squirrels away from the feeder can bring the birds back to your yard. You can do this by covering the feeder's pole with PVC pipe. The slippery surface of the PVC pipe stops the squirrels getting a grip.
Drive a steel fence post into the ground where you're placing the bird feeder. Keep it away from any trees, fences, or other objects from which a squirrel could jump onto the feeder. Check the fence post for level as you drive it into the ground.
Measure and cut a 4-inch PVC pipe long enough that the bottom of the bird feeder is at least 4 1/2 feet above the ground.
Drill holes into the PVC pipe so you can attach the bird feeder. Match the holes on the pipe up with holes on the bird feeder, but make the top hole at least 2 inches below the top of the PVC pipe so you can place a cap onto the pipe. Drill holes that match or are slightly smaller than the screws used to attach the birdfeeder to the PVC pipe.
Attach the bird feeder to the PVC pipe by drilling holes in the back of the birdfeeder that match the holes on the PVC pipe, and sliding 2-inch bolts through the PVC pipe and into the back of the birdfeeder. Secure the birdfeeder to the PVC pipe by tightening nuts on the bolts.
Place a PVC cap over the top end of the PVC pipe to prevent birds from falling down the inside of the pipe.
Slide the PVC pipe onto the fence post.
