How to Determine the Age of Your John Deere Lawn Tractor

When performing repairs or ordering parts, it is sometimes necessary to know the manufacturing year of your tractor so you will get the correct part. You can easily find this information on the tractor or through John Deere customer service.
Locate the serial number on your John Deere lawn tractor. The number is located on a metal plate on the tractor engine. Push the hood release on top of the engine cover at the top of the tractor to expose the engine. Write the serial or model number down.

Download a copy of the serial number lists from the John Deere website. Compare the serial numbers with the numbers on the lists. For example, a tractor with a serial number from 150001 to 160000 has a manufacture date of 1969.
Contact customer service with the serial number if you are unable to locate the year on your own. Some products are unlisted on the download pages due to the large quantity of products.
Determine The Age Of Your John Deere Lawn Tractor
You may be surprised to learn that not all John Deere lawn tractors sport traditional green and yellow. In 1969, John Deere produced lawn tractors with customized hoods and seats in four colors: red, orange, yellow and blue. The entire tractor, other than the hood and seat, was painted white. Pinpointing the age of a vintage John Deere lawn tractor is as simple as checking its color. This metal plate attached to the frame of the mower provides you with the tractor’s model and serial number. Tags may be located under the hood or along the front on older models. Each list contains one decade of lawn tractors. Search for the model number in the first column labeled “Model” on the left hand side of the chart. Model numbers appear in numerical order from lowest to highest. This lists a range of serial numbers. Look to the column to the left to determine the manufacture date of your lawn tractor.
