How To Remove Graffiti From Concrete

Although some consider graffiti a form of art and self-expression, it becomes a crime when applied to private property without the property owner's permission. Vandals use art materials, such as permanent ink and spray paint, to draw symbols, pictures and words on buildings, bridges and various masonry surfaces. Concrete's smooth, porous texture provides an ideal surface for graffiti. Graffiti quickly penetrates concrete and becomes harder to wash off with passing time. Quickly remove graffiti marks from concrete using the right supplies.

Step 1

Spray the graffiti-stained concrete with a power washer that delivers 100 to 300 pounds per square inch of water. Aim the power washer's nozzle 3 feet from the concrete surface to prevent etching the masonry. Wash off as many graffiti marks as possible.

Step 2

Prepare a neutral solution for washing off the graffiti. In a pail, stir together 1 oz. of neutral all-purpose detergent and 1 gallon of warm water.

Step 3

Scrub the neutral solution onto the graffiti using a synthetic scrub brush. Regularly spray the brush with fresh water to rinse out paint or ink.

Step 4

Rinse the concrete surface with the power washer to flush away the graffiti and detergent.

Step 5

Inspect the concrete for colorful graffiti marks. If paint-based graffiti remains, use a foam applicator brush to dab commercial paint remover generously on the colorful stains. Wear protective clothing and gloves.

Step 6

Wait 30 minutes for the paint remover to loosen the graffiti from the concrete and then scrape off the loosened graffiti using a heavy-duty plastic scraper.

Step 7

Rinse the concrete with the power washer to flush away the graffiti and paint remover.
