How to Repel Birds From Awnings
Birds perched on an awning can make a pretty sight; however, the mess they often leave behind is unattractive. Bird droppings are corrosive and can damage what they come in contact with. They can also spread disease. In addition, birds can pose a hazard if they build a nest on the awning and become aggressive in trying to protect it from passers-by. Also, if the nest is heavy enough, it could cause the awning to fall. In order to keep such issues from occurring, you must repel the birds from your awning.
Attach bird spikes to the awning to keep the birds away. Bird spikes are pointed pieces of metal that deter birds from landing.
Apply a nondrying, sticky repellent to the awning. This nontoxic material irritates the birds with its tacky texture and often causes them to stay away.
Place a scare device on the awning. Scare devices include rubber snakes, plastic owls and balloons. Rotate the positions of the scare devices to prevent the birds from getting accustomed to their presence.
Drape bird netting over the awning. If draped the over top of awning, the net can prevent the birds from gaining access to the awning.
Place a motion-activated sprinkler around the awning. The sprinkler releases a burst of water when it detects birds, potentially scaring them and causing them to stay away.
Tip
Bird-deterrent products are available at many garden centers or home improvement stores.
