Jungle Tree Names

Jungles usually refer to region within a tropical rainforest that is hard to access because of thick growth of vines, plants and trees. According to the California Institute of Technology's Learning About Rainforests website, nearly 6 percent of the world's surface is covered in jungles. The type of tree that grows in this jungle really depends on the area of the world in which this jungle is located.

According to the National Institutes of Health, the Astrocaryum jauari is one of the most common trees in the jungle. It is a palm tree that produces edible fruit in the fall, and it grows up to 65 feet tall. It is usually found near river banks or on river islands, and it is a perennial evergreen. It grows in the Amazon, a dense rainforest that stretches throughout South America, including the countries of Venezuela, Colombia, Guyana, Bolivia and Brazil. The Astrocaryum jauari's fruit is often consumed by fish according to Ecocrop.

According to National Geographic, mangroves grow from small shrubs to nearly 200 feet high. These trees have a high tolerance for saltwater and is able to stop some saltwater from entering its systems at the root level. Mangroves often have exposed roots when the tide is low, and it is commonly found near or within rivers, seas and streams. According to National Geographic, this tree is most often found in Southeast Asia, but one variety is also found in New Zealand. There are hardier versions of the mangrove that can adapt to temperate climates.

The hairy walnut is found within the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, which is near the Queensland and South Wales border. It gets it s name from the small hairs that grow on the leaves. These hairs give both the leaf veins and branches a golden color. This tree produces a red fruit with a large seed in the middle. The hairy walnut is a type of laurel tree. According to the Chambers Wildlife Rainforest Lodges, the color of the tree's large fruit ranges from orange to yellow with no hair on the fruit.

The Jamaican cherry fig or Ficus Americana is a small tree that grows in the jungles of Central America, including Costa Rica, El Salvador, Belize, Honduras and Nicaragua. It creates small, white blooms, and it grows up to 42 feet tall according to the Fruitipedia website. The blooms have five petals and a yellow stamen. It produces red, edible figs with yellow seeds, and the fruit grows to a maximum of 1/2 inch wide. The leaves are green and arrowhead shaped that droop slightly from the branches.
