How to Grow Honeysuckle in Pots

If you are looking for an attractive, vigorous and carefree accent vine for the container garden, consider honeysuckle (Lonicera). There are many varieties of honeysuckle that will grow quickly up a trellis or other support system, adding fragrance and blooms to the spring and summer garden. Plant honeysuckle in spring when all danger of frost has passed. Honeysuckle is hardy to USDA zones 9a to 11.

Place the pot in a sunny area. Once filled with soil, it may be too difficult to move, so choose the location carefully.

Fill the planting pot with potting soil and water it well. It needs to be uniformly moist, so water repeatedly, allowing the pot to drain completely.

Install the trellis or support system in the planting pot by using a rubber mallet to pound it into the soil. It needs to be placed 6 inches from the plant, so place it toward the back of the pot.

Dig a hole in the planting mix, 6 inches from the trellis, the same depth as the pot in which the honeysuckle is growing and twice as wide. Remove the plant from its pot and place the roots in the hole. Backfill the hole with soil and pack it around the roots of the plant. Water it again to remove any air pockets.

Tie the honeysuckle to the trellis or stake with the plant ties. Tie them in three locations, evenly spread, along the length of the vine.

Fertilize the honeysuckle with a water-soluble 10-10-10 formula, according to the rate suggested on the label for potted plants in early spring.

Prune the plant just to keep it to the desired shape for its first two years. After that feel free to cut it back as far as you want, even cutting it to the soil. It will grow back. Prune the honeysuckle in early fall.
